The Beginning

I have seen many live resumes that start with the same old bio intro, so I have decided to do something a little different.

Here is my Masters’ Essay submitted in 2008:

My educational background starts with a Computer Programming Diploma from DeVry Institute of Technology in 1983, the beginning of the computer technology revolution. I wanted to be a part of this new world that was unfolding in front of me and thousands of other people; therefore, it was very difficult to find a job in the programming field. So, I fell into the business world as a bookkeeper. As I continued in the bookkeeping field, I pursued my college education and after 10 years, I received an Associate Degree in Science with a concentration in mathematics.
During this journey, I suffered the tragic loss of one of my brothers and several years later my father. These losses in my life made me realize that life is short and I wanted more from my life instead of just living. It was at this point I decided to pursue my degree in education. I wanted to make a difference in the lives of young people. I completed my Bachelor’s degree in 18 months and began teaching in the fall of 2001 combining my love of computers and my goal to make a difference in lives of young people.
Over the past seven years, I have been teaching computer skills to children from kindergarten to fifth grade. My lessons include the introduction of basic computer operation skills, correct typing mechanics, and software applications, as well as integrating these skills into classroom projects. During the last few years, I have noticed that the older students need more challenging lessons to increase their computer skills. This realization made me want to locate a master’s program that would help me achieve this new goal. While doing a Google search on technology masters’ programs, I located your Master of Educational Technology and certification program.
The course design in your Master in Educational Technology helped me make my final decision. I like the fact that you offer a master’s program that gives me everything I need to improve and enhance my teaching skills, and obtain graduate certifications in the specific areas of technology integration and online teaching; finally, a program that allows me to begin immediately.
With this degree and these certifications, I will become a better teacher providing my students with the skills necessary to become technology productive adults. Additionally, I will be able to increase my fellow teachers’ knowledge in integrating technology to enhance their lessons, which will benefit the students’ learning process. With my love of technology and my goal to make a difference in children’s lives, I think I would make a great student in your master’s program. As you review my transcripts, you will see that I am a dedicated student and believe in achieving my goals. I have maintained a grade point average that I am proud of and will continue this dedication in your master program. Finally, the education I receive will allow me to challenge my older students and provide a base-line to enrich the lessons for the younger students.
